The Winter Solstice (Yule) marks the beginning of the Light Half of the Witch's Year.  As the longest night of the year, it is directly opposite the Summer Solstice marking the Longest day of the year. Our annual celebration calls to the light within each of us. The spark of potentiality that lays dormant , germinating and quickening awaiting rebirth.
